Neighbouring pages now touch, with no space between them (GAP in src/lib/model/layout.ts goes from 40 to 0). The existing hairline page border marks the seams. A row with pages of different sizes is still centred, so it looks like a grid without being a strict one. The "+" tiles also sit flush against the page they add to.

Testing

Firefox (Playwright): I imported a 2-slide PDF, then added pages to the right and left of it and one below. Every page shares an edge with a neighbour, and a screenshot of the whole tree confirmed the look.
npm test: 24/24 pass. npm run check: 0 errors.

Neighbouring pages now touch, so the tree reads like a grid. Rows with
pages of different sizes are still centred, so it isn't a strict grid.
